The System:

Servogear Ecoflow Propulsor™

Servogear Ecoflow Propulsor is a Controllable Pitch Propeller system for high-speed workboats, fast ferries, offshore vessels and yachts.

The Servogear Ecoflow Propulsor system is developed to balance speed, bollard pull, manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency in one complete propulsion concept. For vessels operating at high speed and with demanding performance requirements, the right propulsion system can have a major impact on efficiency, handling and long-term operation.

Through continuous theoretical and practical research since 1973, Servogear has developed an efficient propeller system used on a large number of vessels worldwide.

The Servogear CPP system covers an engine range from 400 to 4000 kW and speeds up to 50 knots.

Why choose a Controllable Pitch Propeller system?

A Controllable Pitch Propeller system gives the vessel greater flexibility across different operating conditions. Instead of relying on a fixed propeller setup, the pitch can be adjusted to support the vessel’s need for speed, acceleration, bollard pull and efficient operation.

For shipowners, designers, and yards, this makes CPP especially relevant when the vessel must perform across a wider operational range. The value is not only in the propeller itself but in how the complete propulsion system supports the vessel’s intended use.

  • Improved fuel economy.

Efficient propulsion can contribute to lower fuel consumption and more economic operation.

  • Strong vessel performance.

The system supports a unique combination of high speed, superb acceleration, and ample bollard pull.

  • Better manoeuvrability.

CPP helps improve control and manoeuvrability in demanding vessel operations.

  • Improved passenger comfort.

Smooth and efficient propulsion can help reduce vibration and improve onboard comfort, particularly on passenger vessels and fast ferries.

  • Wider operational range.

The system is designed for vessels that require flexibility across different speeds and operating conditions.

  • Reduced emissions.

Lower fuel consumption contributes to reduced NOx and CO₂ emissions.

Proven Efficiency of Servogear CPP

Tank and full-scale verification tests (graph) have proven that Servogear's controllable pitch propeller system is more efficient than any other known propulsion concept available for high-speed vessels operating in the range 20 – 50 knots.

The graph shows the typical efficiency of the different propulsion systems. Results achieved with an optimized Servogear Ecoflow PropulsorTM have been plotted in for the purpose of comparison. The tests have been conducted by SSPA in Sweden and Marintek in Norway.

A complete propulsion system, engineered as one

CPP is often selected when vessel performance, fuel economy, manoeuvrability, and long-term operation are more important than choosing the simplest propulsion setup.

For high-speed vessels, the propulsion system must support more than forward movement. It must help the vessel accelerate, operate efficiently, maintain control, and perform across the required speed range.

The Servogear Ecoflow Propulsor is developed as a complete propulsion system. It brings together propeller blades, rudders, tunnels, shaft brackets and gearboxes to support the vessel’s overall performance.

For the right vessel and operation profile, the value of CPP is found in the combination of speed, bollard pull, manoeuvrability, fuel efficiency and operational flexibility.

Service and lifecycle support

Support beyond the initial delivery

A propulsion system is not only a project delivery. It is part of the vessel’s long-term operation.

Servogear’s business model includes consulting, development and installation, maintenance, service and support. This means customers can work with Servogear not only when selecting and delivering a CPP propulsion system, but also when planning service, support and long-term operation.

For shipowners and technical teams, this supports the need for predictability, operational stability and planned maintenance.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions about CPP propulsion systems

What is the difference between a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) and a Fixed Pitch Propeller (FPP)? A Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) allows the propeller pitch to be adjusted during operation, while a Fixed Pitch Propeller (FPP) has a fixed blade angle. This gives a CPP system greater flexibility across varying speeds, loads and operating conditions.
Is CPP always better than fixed-pitch propellers? A Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) system is not always a better choice than a Fixed Pitch Propeller (FPP). CPP becomes especially relevant when a vessel operates across varying speeds, loads or operational modes, and when manoeuvrability, acceleration, bollard pull and long-term fuel economy matter.
Why is CPP more expensive? A CPP system typically has a higher initial cost because it is a more advanced, integrated propulsion system that requires more engineering and system integration. The business case should therefore be evaluated based on total cost of ownership, including fuel consumption, maintenance and operational performance, not only the initial purchase price.
How do I know if CPP is right for my vessel? Whether a CPP system is right for a vessel depends on its operation profile, including speed range, load variation, routes, power requirements, manoeuvring needs and fuel expectations.
What does Servogear deliver beyond the propeller? Servogear delivers a complete propulsion system and works closely with ship designers, owners and yards to optimize the vessel’s performance.
Can Servogear support service and aftermarket? Servogear supports customers beyond the initial delivery with maintenance, service and technical support throughout the propulsion system’s lifecycle. Together with BOS Power, Servogear can also support customers in planning service and long-term operation.
How early should Servogear be involved in a vessel project? Servogear should ideally be involved during the concept and design phase, so the propulsion system, hull, power system and operation profile can be optimized together.
